The Color Purple Post 1

5 Things I Understand:

• In the beginning the main character is talking to God.
• It's sad how the main character's mother died, when she was still at a young age.
• It's kind of ironic how the character is telling God everything that happens, when she also believes God knows everything and makes everything happen for a reason.
• It is obvious that the character, I presume to be the main character, does not have a good relationship with her mother or most anyone.
• Reading the book is somewhat confusing because the main character jumps from topic to topic with no transitions.

4 Questions:

• Why is the main character talking to God, if God is all knowing?
• Who is Lucious?
• Who really killed the baby?(I don't believe God killed it.)
• Why is there so much dying in the beginning of the story?

3 Words:

• "She say Mr. ___ was taking somethin out his billfold to show Pa..."(Walker 6). (Def: a thin, flat, folding case, often of leather, for carrying paper money in the pocket and with fewer compartments than a wallet.)
• "What you settingherelaughing like a fool fer" (Walker 15).(Def: a combining form meaning that which carries the thing specified by the initial element, used in the formation of compound words.)
• "He drop the hoe in the furrow" (Walker 26). (Def: a narrow groove made in the ground, esp. by a plow.)

2 Literary Devices:

• Simile: "They cry like they mama just die" (Walker 29). This is a simile because they describe the way the children were cring with the way they would cry if their mother died.
• Interjection: "He fell bam up against the stove" (Walker 37). This is interjection because it expresses a sound.

1 Summary Sentence: The first section of my reading is just the main character giving a plot as she grows older; about her family and what happens around town.
