-Metaphor: "You are the handicap you must face," (Jakes 27). This is a metaphor because he is desribing a person who doesn't believe in themself to a handicap person.
-Simile: "much quieter, less outspoken, a self-described "background person" who worked like a horse" (Jakes 30). This is a simile because it basically compares the way the step-mother works to a horse's work.
