5 Things I Understand:

• Shug is basically a mess, when she is brought to their home.
• Celie finds her comfort place when she is sewing between Mr. and Shug Avery.
• Celie seems to be somewhat educated, but the way she is telling the story seems as if she dumb.
• Celie is a person you can talk to about anything, we see it when Harpo's wife is talking about Harpo.
• Shug seems very ignoant.

4 Questions:

• Why does Celie write in fragments?
• How come Celie hardly mentions Nettie?
• Where are Celie's kids?
• Why does it really seem as if Celie is becoming more stronger and independent as she encounters more people?

• "She muse" (Walker 58). (Def: to meditate on.)
• "Jukejoint sposed to be back in the woods..."(Walker 69). (Def: an establishment where one can eat, drink, and, usually, dance to music provided by a jukebox.)
• "It put me in the mind of a gramaphone" (Walker 98). (Def: the most common device for playing recorded sound from the 1870s through the 1980s.)

2 Literary Devices:

• Simile: "She smile, like a razor opening" (Walker 57). This is a simile because it compares Shug's smile to a razor opening.
• Metaphor: "She look bout ten with her hair all cornrowed" (Walker 57). This is a metaphor becausemthe main character Ceiley is saying Shug looks like a ten year old because her hair style.
